Hey 6th and 7th graders!!

We are headed to Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri this summer for Student Life Camp, June 4-8.

This year's theme is:

2012 Theme: Audacious
"BE ON YOUR GUARD; STAND FIRM IN THE FAITH; BE COURAGEOUS; BE STRONG."

1 CORINTHIANS 16:13

The Christian life isn't easy and some would say it shouldn't be. So, how do your students look at their Christian life? Do they look at it as a chore? Do they look at it as a challenge? Do they see it as a journey and not a destination? We want to help your students live a life without boundaries. A life in which they are bold not just for the sake of being seen, but bold because they serve a God that is bold. A God that sees what they can become. How do they do that? They do that by Being on Guard, Standing Firm in the Faith. Being Courageous and Being Bold. Being Audacious.

Hey 180 8th Graders!!

The 2012 Rosebud Mission Trip is for current 8th graders who are passionate to spread the love of Jesus Christ.  We’ll be evangelizing, serving, and loving children and their families on the Rosebud Indian Reservation.

We’ll be part of the bigger vision to plant a church and see long lasting change on the reservation that only Christ’s transformation can bring.  Exciting things are happening on the Rez, as we continue to get closer to planting a church and our student exchange program is gains momentum.  We are seeking to bring back 15-20 pre-teen/teenage Rosebud students this summer!

Throughout the week, we will be leading a kids’ camp for the Rosebud youth, playing with children during the day, and serving in various projects.  We’ll also take a day to tube down the Niobrara River in nearby Valentine, NE.

For more detailed information about the trip details see the attached document, which is also located in the link below to register for the trip.

Hey 180!

Check out these cool stories about what a few small groups did for the Xtreme Serve challenge last semester!

Andersen/Broussard Small Group (6th Grade Girls)
For our Xtreme Serve, the girls decided to collect pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House. The girls raised SO many pop tabs!! 3 coffee cans full and around 7 large sandwich bags...too many to count! They are so passionate about this that we decided to continue our collecting for at least the rest of the school year. We would love for the rest of 180 to join us in collecting! Ronald McDonald houses are a place that feels like home for families to stay, while their loved ones are in continuous hospital care. Some families stay for a week, while others months. I personally used Ronald McDonald houses growing up and think they are a fantastic organization. (You can find more detailed information below.)

Barrientos/Kelley Small Group (8th Grade Boys)
For our Xtreme Serve, we RAKed - that is, R(andom) A(ct of) K(indness) - two lawns that were filled to the brim with leaves. We completely filled up Joel’s truck and Omar’s SUV with leaves and drove them out to the Haverkamps’ field, where the leaves met their fiery demise. But not before we had some fun wrestling and making spectacular football catches in the huge leaf pile. The guys don’t know this yet, but we’ll be shoveling some random driveways (sorry, no clever acronyms for this one) at some point this winter! If you want yours shovelled, let me know :)

-Shane Kelley

Brekke/Thorsbakken/Butikofer Small Group (8th Grade Boys)
We helped move straw bales for Brekke's Town & Country Store. They donated money to our group which we then used to purchase items for a family through the Wishing Tree Project at the Huxley Clothes Pantry.

Hey 180 students and parents!

As text messaging is one of the most popular ways to communicate today, the FCA devotional below really connects with me and with the message Joel gave Wednesday night about powering down and spending time with God, or getting "Synced Up".

Since our relationship with God should affect everything we do, it is important to make sure we devote quality time and intentional communication to that relationship.  As my wife says, "if you really care, don't send a text."  I feel this is true especially with our relationship with God.  As texts are great for communicating quickly and efficiently, they just can't convey the emotion of verbal communication or replace the impact of quality time spent with someone you care about. The same is true of God.

Thanks to Perry Balke for sending this on and if it convicts you like it did me, let it drive us all back to spending time God!

Texting God
Thursday, January 19th, 2012

READY:

"You will call to Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart."
Jeremiah 29:12-13

SET:

Have you ever had a time in your life when you wanted to be pursued and listened to? As human beings, we naturally desire to be in relationships, to have open lines of communication with others. Have you ever wanted that with someone who didn't reciprocate?

There was a time in my own life in which I was pleading with God to re-establish an open line of communication with a friend. And I was asking Him to allow it to be through verbal communication, not another all-to-familiar text message. But when that didn't happen, I couldn't understand why He wasn't answering my prayers. I then realized that He was answering, just not in the way I expected. The Lord used that situation, as He often does, to teach me a lesson about the kind of communication He desires from each of His beloved children.

Although text messages are a popular form of communication and allow for quick and easy interaction, they are very impersonal. While text messages can complement verbal communication, any relationship of depth cannot be based on or centered around them.

Through my own situation, I felt God saying, "I want more than text messages from you." I started thinking about how often I simply "text" God throughout the day, sending up quick prayers (usually prayer requests) without any follow-up. While it is awesome to be able to talk to God at any point during the day, He wants more than just "text messages" from each of us. He wants us to pursue Him, to be rooted in prayer. He desires that we be open and honest and that we open up our hearts to Him — to not only ask but to praise. He will listen!

Prayer is our opportunity to communicate with Him. He craves a deeper relationship with each of us, where we talk to Him in depth, as well as listening to Him through His Word (the Bible) and the Holy Spirit.

GO:

1. Do you take time to communicate with God through more than text message-like prayers?
2. When was the last time you spent quality time really talking to God?
3. Have you ever spent time trying to let Him talk to you through the Bible and the Holy Spirit?
4. How can you start to pursue God more in depth today?

WORKOUT:

Psalm 119:164
Matthew 6:9-15
1 Thessalonians 5:17

Hey 180 Parents,

I just want to thank you all for what you do.  I know that most of you have full schedules and on top of that you make 180 a priority for the students and for that I cannot thank you enough.

I have been challenged recently by the Lord's command to Sabboth one day a week in order to rest and recharge.  I thought you all might enjoy this article (below), even though it is geared towards full time youth ministers I am sure it will speak to many of you with busy lives.  I know the "Sabboth Moments" were a great reminder for me to stop for 5-20 minutes every once in a while in order reconnect with the God of the Universe who I am doing all this for.

Have a great weekend and Sabboth!

Days Off: A Response

Darren Sutton

Like Days Off: A Response on Facebook

Sabbath.  It’s a wonderfully biblical, churchy word for ‘take-a-load-off-before-you-implode!’

Our souls need respite.  Our Spirit cries out for rejuvenation.  And, yet, Sabbath days just seem hard to come by.  Whether it’s the subtle deception from the enemy that I’m ‘being lazy’ or the long list of ‘non-ministry’ things that need to be done in the wake of doing ministry without a Sabbath – I have a really difficult time unplugging for an entire day.  (Not denying its importance or the command of Scripture – just being honest.)It never fails.  When I finally DO achieve a true Sabbath day, within the next 48 hours I’ve lived six years of ministry and walked a million roads of hot coals and broken glass.  Right back I go to the life I’ve come to recognize as most familiar…..

I am learning that Sabbath, although commanded for one day each week, is not JUST for that day….kind of like orange juice and breakfast.  I am learning to appreciate and revel in Sabbath moments. Taking the long way to work (which entails all of an additional five minutes) because it allows me to drive along the beach.  Stealthily making my way to the student center merely to sit in solitary confinement for twenty minutes.  Coming home an hour early so I can cook something for the family because I WANT to, not because I have to.

Finding Sabbath moments has simply come to mean, in my life, recognizing my tank-filling activities and embracing them without guilt.  I can find five minutes for a little extra drive time.  I can embrace uninterrupted peace and quiet in the student center for twenty minutes (as long as it is devoid of students!).  I can occasionally slip out of the office an hour early for a little ‘Iron Chef’ time!

But Sabbath moments can’t replace a true Sabbath day of rest in our lives.  Sabbath days are deep, abiding, dedicated hours.  We were reminded yesterday that Sabbath days are a true gift to us from God.  Sabbath moments are more like a Hallmark card. The right word at the right time – a commercial that would be laughable if it weren’t so timely and heart-melting – a smaller investment in achieving the same sentiment.

I have five Sabbath ‘moments’….they vary in length from five minutes to half a day.  To make effective use of them, I had to identify them.  What are yours?  Enjoy them.  (And take a day off, too!)  - Darren Sutton

Hey 180,

Below is a link to a documentary that ABC 20/20 recently did on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. I HIGHLY recommend watching this.

This gives a fantastic real life picture of what life is like on the Rosebud Indian Reservation.  Pine Ridge is about 40 miles from the town of Rosebud where we have most of our relationships as a church family.

I recommend watching it with the family!

Mon, 12 Sep 2011 12:39:00 -0700 ALERT: Band and Vocal Auditions this Saturday http://my180life.posterous.com/alert-band-and-vocal-auditions-this-saturday http://my180life.posterous.com/alert-band-and-vocal-auditions-this-saturday

Hello everyone! You may not know me, but my name is Trevor Roose and I am the new worship intern for Escape/180 this year. I’m super excited for the things that God is and will be doing! I’m also pumped to be able to get to know a ton of Escape and 180’ers this year.

With that being said, I’d like to inform you of the upcoming band auditions that we will be having. Tentatively, we are planning on the morning of September 17th (this Saturday). We are looking for anyone that has a desire to serve Christ with their gift of music. More specifically, we are looking for guitar players, bass players, drummers, keyboardists as well as vocalists. But if there is different instrument that your child plays, let us know and we can maybe work something out. Along with band members, we are looking for a couple individuals that would be interested in serving with the Audio/Visual aspect of Wednesday night.

If you are interested in auditioning, please click the link at the bottom.  Once you have found the group, locate the “Needs” tab and select either Band or Vocals. You can then pick one of the selected needs (according to one of the time slots). Then find the “Files” tab and pick two of the songs listed to practice. Prepare for those two songs, and show up to Cornerstone (The Box) on Saturday 10 minutes before your scheduled time.

After auditions, I will send out an email letting you know the results. Also, if there is anyone that is interested in helping out with Audio or Video, please shoot me an email at trevroose@gmail.com. I’ll get back to you and we can work something out. Thanks everyone! I’m looking forward to a great year!

Thu, 04 Aug 2011 06:56:00 -0700 BLOG: Summer Highlights http://my180life.posterous.com/blog-summer-highlights http://my180life.posterous.com/blog-summer-highlights

It’s hard to believe summer is almost over! It feels like just yesterday that Brian Fager and I were standing outside in a rainstorm with a bunch of middle schoolers dumping ketchup, mustard, and relish all over us. Since that Spring 180 finale, God has used this summer to do some sweet things in the lives of 180ers. Here are my Top 5 180 highlights from this summer:

1) Student Life Camp: In June, 47 students and 10 leaders made the trek to Estes Park, Colorado. We got to hear great teaching from JR Vassar, experience sweet times of worship, and enjoy being in one of the most beautiful areas of God’s creation. Oh, and we also learned that a “homer for Gomer” is not just a silly phrase but a sweet illustration of God’s love for us.

2) Rosebud: Later in June, we took a crew of 8th graders to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota to serve the community there. We played with kids during the day, ran a Kid’s Camp at night, and had a great time hanging out with each other in between. I could not have been more impressed with the maturity and passion for Christ exhibited by our 8th graders and I am confident that their work will bring lasting change to Rosebud. Eighth graders, start looking forward to this trip now!

3) God’s Story: For this summer’s teaching series, we did a flyover of the Bible from Creation to Revelation. We learned that the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament are one and the same. We also learned that the Bible is not a collection of good stories. It is one story: His Story.

4) 100 foot Slip n’ Slide: This was pretty awesome. I’m not making any promises, but next year’s Slip n’ Slide might be even better. Scratch that, I promise next year’s Slip n’ Slide will be even more amazing.

5) Looking forward to Fall: Okay, so this last one isn’t really about something that happened this summer, but I am really looking forward to 180 kicking back into gear this Fall. I’m especially looking forward to Rusty Hutchison taking the reins, the Fall Retreat, and seeing how tall last year’s 6th grade boys have grown (and how much deeper their voices are now!). There will certainly be a lot of things different about this year than last, but I’m expecting the same (if not greater) levels of superfantastic-awesomeness.

So 180 has wrapped up for the school year… but not forever… Summer 180 and Escape22 start JUNE 15th.   So we thought now would be a good time to blurb about some recent happenings in the 180 world!

  • Father-Son/ Mother-Daughter day: Isn't anytime set apart with your busy schedules for just those two a success??? Nonetheless this exceeded all success. Bonding, bonding, bonding! Questions that had never been asked before were discussed- simple questions such as "What was your favorite class in high school?" to hard questions such as "Who were your friends in high schools and in what ways did they influence you?" Of course fun was sprinkled throughout it with the ladies having the scavenger hunt of their lives and the men had fire start competitions, road 4-wheelers, and a manhood scavenger journey of their own.  In all, 3 words to sum it all up: FUN, MEMORABLE, ENCOURAGING

  • 8th grade night/last 180: Wowzers. Some 8th graders went on stage and shared the biggest thing they've learned in their time in middle school and you'd think that they would all copy each other and say the same thing or just say something quick to get them off the stage. We guessed way wrong! Wisdom was found on these 8th graders lips as they spoke to their younger peers about being honest with your parents, choosing friends that will push you to God, truly having God work in you, and much more! God is so good in the way that He works- He works beyond age and learning capacity- He works in ways that rightfully bring glory to Him and Him alone. To God be the praise for His work over the past 3 years with the 8th graders!

  • 180 in general: More students came to know Jesus more. We're not about the numbers. We're about Jesus. Yes, more students did attend 180 this year than ever before but what we want to focus on more is that more students came to know and meet with God. Even if they had only been able to come sporadically, or if they could only come if their ride was going, or if they came regularly since they graduated from D6- God's gospel was proclaimed in crystal clear ways, and He moved in ways seen and unseen.  God's truth spoke louder than the lies of satan. God showed up- and he continues to work in the lives of students, parents, and leaders. Can I get an AMEN!?

Thu, 03 Mar 2011 07:41:05 -0800 INFO: Drummers Needed + Trip Deposit Deadline http://my180life.posterous.com/info-drummers-needed-trip-deposit-deadline http://my180life.posterous.com/info-drummers-needed-trip-deposit-deadline

From Shane Rothlisberger…

Dear 180 parents,
The search is on for a couple drummers…or potential drummers, for the 180 worship team. Does your student play the drum kit or other percussion in a school band? Does your student have access to a drum kit to play/practice on regularly? Or does your student simply show signs of potential in rhythmic ability, would enjoy serving in 180, and loves to make noise for Jesus? If so let me know! We have Escape (High School) students willing to work with 180 students to help develop their gifts and heart for worship through music – Shane (shanerothlisberger@gmail.com).

Also, just a reminder that the $50 deposit deadline for Student Life and Rosebud is Wednesday, March 30th.

Lastly, NO GRAPPLE the next two Sundays. We’ll be at a youth leader conference this wknd and next wknd is spring break.

Have a great day enjoying Him,

Joel

Sun, 27 Feb 2011 04:40:20 -0800 BLOG: Handing out bibles in Zambia http://my180life.posterous.com/blog-handing-out-bibles-in-zambia http://my180life.posterous.com/blog-handing-out-bibles-in-zambia

From Julianne Hamil... 6th grade 180 leader who recently returned from Zambia...

Pure joy is what I saw and felt when I met the children at the Hope Center. In December my team went there to deliver Adventure Bibles and plant fruit trees. We planted almost 200 trees including mango, banana, orange avocado and other fruit trees. The added nutrition from the fruit will greatly increase the health of the kids in years to come. The Hope Center began only three years ago and the kids are already learning about Jesus five days a week and getting a nutritious meal each day.

The trees are just one way God blessed the Hope Center this year. Because of our AWESOME 180 contributions we were able to give Bibles to all the orphans currently supported by the Hope Center and many English speaking leaders and parents at the Kamena and Teta churches. Praise God!!! That is just the beginning though, there are millions of children in Zambia that still need Bibles so they can learn about Jesus too. I wish there was a way to show all of you how every Bible we send is so powerful in changing the lives of these kids. I hope someday each of you will go on mission trips and see for yourself how important Gods word is everywhere!

The kids supported by the Hope Center learn about Jesus five days a week, and it shows in the way they light up as they receive their Bibles before class. One morning there was a little boy named Web in my group who was overly upset. He wouldn’t even lift his head or make eye contact with anyone because he was crying. He didn’t answer me when I asked what was wrong, so I told another kid to ask him in his own language. Webby was upset because he couldn’t find his Bible.

I felt so bad for him that I immediately searched through the remaining Bibles on the table trying to find it. It was nowhere to be found, and I couldn’t stop the teaching to have all the kids check their own Bibles; so I went table to table reading every kid’s cover and still had no luck. His Bible was missing. Now I was fighting back tears because I didn’t want to tell Webby that I couldn’t find it. I decided to try to give him my Bible with a promise he would get a new one if we couldn’t find his. That didn’t work either. He didn’t even lift his head when they passed out crayons for coloring and it is a special treat to be able to color. It didn’t faze him; he kept his tiny head snuggled in his arms crying over his lost Bible. It broke me to see the love this tiny kid had for God’s word.

After the class was over all the leaders dug through all the Bibles to help me try and find it and God answered my prayers. Another kid walked over and handed me an outer jacket cover with Webby’s name on the front, it had fallen off. Someone else had taken a Bible without a cover so we were able to put his Bible back together again!

I turned around to see Webby in the same position, head face down wrapped in his arms, so I ran over and told him the good news. When I said the words, “we found your Bible,” his head popped up quickly and through the dried tears that painted streaks through the dirt on his face he smiled and grabbed it out of my hands. His English was better than I thought! After he snuggled it for awhile he finally walked over and put it on the table with the other Adventure Bibles and headed out to play. Games, playing with other kids, even bright colorful crayons couldn’t cheer him up until we found his Bible. In a country where these kids have less than what we would consider nothing, everything matters. But to Webby nothing mattered more than his Bible, they are truly a treasure to everyone who gets one!

There is no limit to the amount of lives one Bible can save; it is a gift that forever gives life. Raising money to buy Bibles so others can learn about Jesus makes all of you life savers!

Check out this video showing the orphans receiving bibles and the pastors gratefulness

Thank you 180, keep up the good work J
